What defines a good digital prototype in game design?

A digital prototype within the context of professional game development serves as a crucial instrument for validating core concepts and mitigating risks before committing significant resources. Unlike paper prototypes or conceptual documents, a digital prototype offers an interactive, albeit rudimentary, representation of the intended player experience. Its primary function is not aesthetic fidelity or feature completeness, but rather the tangible exploration of fundamental mechanics, systems interactions, and the overall game loop. A truly effective digital prototype transcends mere technical demonstration; it becomes a dynamic testbed for design hypotheses, enabling teams to confront and evaluate the experiential core of their project early in the lifecycle.

The hallmark of a superior digital prototype, particularly for seasoned game designers, lies in its inherent capacity to facilitate rapid and meaningful iteration. The development landscape is characterized by constant refinement, and a prototype's value is directly proportional to how efficiently it allows designers to test variations, implement feedback, and pivot based on empirical findings. This iterative potential is paramount. A good prototype is architected for change, allowing for swift adjustments to core mechanics, control schemes, or system parameters without requiring extensive refactoring. It prioritizes flexibility and modularity, enabling designers to isolate variables, conduct focused playtests, and gather actionable data that informs subsequent design decisions, ultimately accelerating the journey towards a compelling and well-tuned gameplay experience.

So, while various factors contribute to a prototype's utility, its effectiveness for professional game designers is most significantly defined by its ability to serve as a catalyst for iteration. A good digital prototype is not merely a proof-of-concept but an adaptable experimental platform. It provides clear, interactive feedback on core gameplay, is structured for efficient modification, and empowers design teams to refine their vision through cycles of testing and adjustment. Investing in the creation of prototypes optimized for iteration is therefore not just a best practice, but a strategic imperative for navigating the complexities of modern game development and increasing the probability of delivering a successful final product.

Game Design activity sessions – Part 1: remodelling a space war on a blank paper sheet

When I was a child, there was a game we used to play during the free time in between classes. It doesn’t have an official name, but my friends and I always called it “Space War”. Basically, the game’s main idea is:

1) in a regular blank paper trace a dividing line right in the middle of it;

2) Each player (and it’s a two player game) draws 3 to 6 spaceships (represented by triangles) randomly on their side;

3) the oldest player starts: they must draw a small circle on their side, this is called a “shot”;

4) on the next step, this player must fold the paper sheet;

5) after folding the paper the player must guess the place their opponent drew the “shot” and draw another small circle pressing the pen firmly on the area;

6) finally, the player must unfold the paper to check if the “shot” hit the target (the spaceship/triangle); then, it’s the other player’s turn to play. Important rule: one “shot” only hits a spaceship if it is completely inside the triangle area.

Ok! After trying this game and understanding it, your mission in this exercise is: trying to modify the basic gaming mechanics by adding power cards and dice, giving the ships new abilities and trying to create more uncertainty in a match. Think big and modify the space game with creativity (and try to think of a less stupid name for it).

TÍZ

Today I’ll talk a little bit about a recent independent work. I’m a researcher/teacher in a communication university from Brazil but also a game designer. I recently started a partnership with my friend Rafael Verri to develop mobile games, and I would like to talk about our first project: TÍZ, a game for iPhone.



TÍZ (“ten” in Hungarian) is a dice rolling puzzle with ten sided dice (D10). It’s a very simple game with very intuitive interface. In TÍZ, the player can play alone versus the computer or versus a friend. The goal is to arrange the dice in lines on the board to create sequences. A sequence without connection between the numbers (like 2, 5, 9) is worth 1 point, an ordely sequence (like 5, 6, 7) is worth 3 points and, finally, a sequence with equal numbers (like 7, 7, 7) is worth 6 points. The player who gets 18 points first wins the game.

I was responsible for the game design and creation of aesthetics. The original version of TÍZ is an analogic board game with real dice and the whole idea started with a simple prototype -- my attention was focused on the core mechanic.

As Fullerton says (2008, p.188) the core gameplay mechanism, or “core mechanic” can be defined as the actions that a player repeats most often while striving to achieve the game’s overall goal. Fullerton (2008, p.189 and 190) also stresses the importance of creating prototypes to see the “soul” of the game.

The core mechanic was the starting point of the project, but we have some additional features that complete the whole game. I want to highlight some important details about the creative process of TÍZ:

1.The internal logic of creating lines with three dice and a sequence of numbers came from tic-tac-toe, Sudoku and poker.

2.The score was created from the logic of triangular numbers (click here to learn more). This resource is very helpful and lots of games use this idea for scoring.

3.The layout was designed based on minimal abstract arts from the artist Josef Albers (link here).

4. The balance of the game was made with many playtests. I insist that this is a very important part of the creative process. (check this previous post about this subject here). It’s necessary to have multiple views on the gaming dynamics to detect errors.

There's no secret or mystery. We need to play and study a lot of games to create new ludic experiences.

Hints & tips for a good game prototype – Part I (card game)

A good idea for a game needs a good prototype. In the first tests of your game is totally understandable the use of sketches, roughs and non-finished materials, but a formal presentation to a publisher needs more care.

In this post I´ll talk about analogical prototype. More precisely how to create a card game prototype.

I like to create cards in three layers of paper:

1) First layer: the back from the card (with some kind of pattern or the logotype of the game) printed with laser jet in a good opaque paper;
2) Second layer: I like to put a middle layer using a thick paper. It’s important to maintain your card resistant and plain;
3) Third layer: the front of the card with the content of the game in the same way of the first layer.

In the end it’s important to keep your cards protected from physical damage. I strongly recommend putting the cards inside plastic protector sleeves.

Your game will look more professional and your idea certainly will be clearer to the publisher or your beta test group.
